4G Smartphone Comparison: Comparing the HTC Evo 4G, Motorola Atrix 4G and Samsung Epic 4G

Posted on April 7, 2011

The current line of 4G smartphones constitutes the cutting-edge of mobile phone technology. With the Android operating system rapidly gaining market-share, it makes sense to look at top-of-the-line 4G smartphones using Android. Each of the phones below offers 4G service and the Android operating system. Which is the best?

HTC Evo 4G

The HTC Evo 4G was the first 4G phone and it set a high benchmark. With 8.0 megapixel primary and 1.3 megapixel front-facing cameras, it provides face-to-face or HD streaming video. The mini HDMI port allows you to connect to a large screen to view presentations or entertainment, and the mini USB port allows another means of data transfer. It also comes with a kick-stand, allowing you to view hands-free either vertically or horizontally.

Samsung Epic 4G

The Samsung Epic 4G is slightly more expensive then the HTC Evo 4G. What do you get for the money? Most noticeably, you get a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard, which may be easier to use than the virtual one available on both phones. You also get 16GB of built-in memory on the Epic versus only 8GB on the Evo, although both can be expanded up to 32GB. The Epic's Hummingbird processor and Super AMOLED display also generally give it a longer battery life. The Epic lacks the mini HDMI port of the Evo, but video can be output using a 3.5mm headphone out cable, just not in HD.

There are differences in the user interface, even though both phones use the Android operating system. The brightness and crispness of the display may also be a matter of personal preference. The primary camera of the Epic is only 5 megapixels, but it has autofocus.

Motorola Atrix

Motorola's Atrix comes with a dual-core processor and the world's first qHD display. The qHD has 960x540 pixel resolution compared to the 800x400 resolution on the Epic and Evo. The Atrix also has fingerprint recognition technology for added security. Like the Epic, it comes with 16GB of on-board memory, expandable to 32GB. Also like the Epic, it has a 5 megapixel primary camera and a front-facing camera for video chat. Like the Evo, it has a mini HDMI port to output HD video. The Atrix comes with Firefox web browser, Adobe Flash player, and Quick Office installed.

What really sets the Atrix apart is the Lapdock accessory. This is a notebook sized keyboard and screen without a brain until the Atrix is connected in the back, bringing the Lapdock to life. The Atrix provides the processor, memory, and wireless link to the rest of the world, while the lapdock provides a more human friendly keybord and touchscreen video display. Of course, as an accessory, the Lapdock is only available at an extra cost.

Each of the 4G smartphones has something unique to offer. The best phone is the one which best fits your needs. When you decide, let us know.
